Access Carmel Probate Court Records
Carmel probate court records are handled through Hamilton County, not the City of Carmel. If you need to find a will, an estate case, a guardianship filing, or any other probate document tied to a Carmel address, you must go through the Hamilton County Clerk's Office in Noblesville. Carmel has a City Court, but that court handles only traffic and minor criminal matters, not probate. All estate and guardianship cases go to Hamilton County Circuit Court. Carmel residents can search probate court records for free on the Indiana MyCase portal or contact the Hamilton County Clerk directly.
Carmel Quick Facts
Which Court Handles Carmel Probate
Carmel is part of Hamilton County, and all probate matters for Carmel residents go through the Hamilton County Circuit and Superior Courts. There is no separate probate court in Carmel. Indiana law under IC 29-1-7-1 places probate venue in the county where the decedent lived. Carmel residents' estates are therefore filed in Hamilton County.
It is worth knowing that Carmel does have a City Court. The Carmel City Court handles traffic infractions, ordinance violations, and criminal misdemeanor cases. It is a court of limited jurisdiction. It does not handle probate matters. Probate in Indiana is always a county-level function, handled by the Circuit or Superior Court in the county where the decedent lived.
Carmel is one of Indiana's most populous cities and has a high concentration of residents with complex estates. Hamilton County handles wills, trusts, estate administrations, and guardianships for all Carmel residents. The Hamilton County Clerk maintains all these case files and is your point of contact for records requests.

Types of Probate Records in Carmel
Hamilton County processes all standard probate case types for Carmel residents. This includes wills filed for safekeeping before or after death, petitions to admit a will to probate, supervised and unsupervised estate administration files, letters of administration or testamentary, inventory and appraisement filings, guardianship and conservatorship cases, trust proceedings, and adoption records where permitted.
Carmel residents frequently deal with real estate-heavy estates given the high property values in the area. The Hamilton County probate process handles both simple estates and more complex situations involving multiple beneficiaries, contested wills, or business interests. All of these go through the same county court.
Unsupervised administration is the most common format. In these cases, the personal representative manages the estate without regular court approval but still files required documents with the clerk. Supervised administration is used when the court must approve asset sales, when heirs disagree, or when the complexity of the estate requires oversight. Both generate permanent records stored with the Hamilton County Clerk.
